JOEY CHESTNUT DOWNS 91 TAMALES IN 10 MINS FOR ANOTHER LEWISVILLE WIN!
Joey “Jaws” Chesnut, the top-ranked competitive eater in the world, ate 91 tamales in 10 minutes to win the 9th annual World Tamale Eating Championship in Lewisville, Texas, and retain the title he first won last year.
Tim “Eater X” Janus, a four-time winner of the tamale championship, placed second with a total of 78 tamales. Miki Sudo placed third with 76 tamales, the highest total by a female eater in the history of the event.
“The tamale discipline is among the most difficult in the competitive eating world, requiring significant jaw strength and stomach capacity,” said George Shea, Chairman of Major League Eating. “Watching the event is enough to quicken the pulse and lift the heart of any American who has both.”
The World Tamale Eating Championship was held during the annual Western Days festival in Old Town Lewisville. The event, organized by the Lewisville Convention and Visitors Bureau and officially sanctioned by Major League Eating (MLE), paid a total purse of $3,500 to the top six finishers. Dat’s Good BBQ, a family-owned Lewisville restaurant, provided the traditional hand-made pork tamales for the competition.
Following Sudo in the final results were Jeff Butler of Phoenix (54), Michelle Lesco of Tucson (47) and amateur eater Josh Miller of San Antonio (42). This year's event marked the first time two female eaters have placed in the top six in the event's nine-year history. Sisters, respect.
Wade Peck, a Lewisville parks department employee who won a city employee contest earlier in the week to earn a spot at the table on Saturday, tied for eighth with 29 tamales. It is the highest-ever finish in the world championship for a City champion, and is tied for the ninth-best total ever by a Texas eater.
This year, the 14 competitors combined to eat 562 tamales during the 10-minute contest (an average of 40.1 per person), turning in three of the five best individual results in the history of the event.
