SONYA THOMAS WINS THE INAUGURAL NATIONAL HAMBURGER-EATING CHAMPIONSHIP!
The Black Widow has struck again! After 10 minutes of furious eating, Sonya Thomas—the world's #4-ranked eater—ate 16 quarter-pound burgers and buns for the win in the inaugural National Hamburger-Eating Championship! As is her trademark, the 100-pound marvel defeated the men in the field, including reigning champion, Akron firefighter Matt Askea.
Eric "Badlands" Booker came in second place with 14.5 burgers consumed. His rapping, as ever, was peerless, inciting the assembled throng to shake their good things like the good Lord intended. Yasir "The Doggy Bag" Salem continued his podium-placing ways of 2012 with another impressive showing—11 burgers for third place.

The two-day National Hamburger Festival, now in its seventh year, took place on Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19 in historic Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron. More than 140,000 hamburger fans enjoyed family fun, great entertainment and one of the largest assortments of hamburgers ever assembled in one place. Over 20 different eateries served 50 different styles of burgers. The festival raises money each year for one of Akron’s favorite charities, the Akron Children’s Hospital.
